Well, it’s finally here. After about a year, if not more, of development. Jim Brady, Steve Buttry and the TBD gang launched its highly anticipated community-driven news platform today in Washington, D.C. Normally I wouldn’t be so excited over a news site launching in an area that has almost no relevance to me, but it is [...]

I've always thought that if journalism was going to truly move forward, it's going to have to start again from the ground up. That includes thinking differently about journalism education. Here are three bold things students can do to make the most of it.

The ups and downs of geolocation tools, and what we can learn from them

Friday, July 2, 2010

It seems many people are looking toward geolocation as the future of social media — that is, if it isn’t already “here” now. The evolution of online networking has taken big steps the past few years. We’ve already nailed down connecting with friends and family (MySpace, then Facebook). We then nailed down connecting with random people [...]

(Nothing spectacular here; just wanted to put a thought down while I had it. I may expand on this later.) I’ve spent the majority of this week training for my second stint at The Grand Rapids Press, learning the new system workflow it implemented since last summer. Between that and settling in on the northwest side [...]

Moving your newsroom workflow to the Web

I had this coming weekend circled on my calendar for a couple months — a chance to meet in person some of the most brilliant minds on the future of journalism at BarCamp NewsInnovation in Philadelphia. BCNI is a conference that uses an open-grid format for sessions, allowing virtually anybody who attends to organize an [...]

An ode to CoPress… and a look ahead

It was a little more than a year ago when, as online editor at Central Michigan Life, I was tasked with reconstructing cm-life.com from the ground up. Since we were one of dozens of student newspapers that used College Publisher, we first considered upgrading from 4.0 to 5.0, which would effectively redesign the site and give [...]

Tip sheet for aspiring journalists, Twitter page and other things I’ve been working on

It’s been awhile since I updated this, so I thought I’d write up a snapshot of what exactly I’ve been up to the past month or so. On the online front, we have an online editor at Central Michigan Life — Dave Veselenak, who was managing editor last fall. This makes it a lot easier on [...]
